Travis Scott performed at a pre-Oscars party in his first public performance after the Astroworld tragedy.
The performance was at a private, celebrity event at a house party in Bel Air, California. TMZ reported on Scott’s performance, which included a mixture of rapping and DJing at the party. Video of the party emerged on Sunday morning of Travis Scott rapping “Sicko Mode” for guests in attendance. The crowd included Leonardo DiCaprio, Venus and Serena Williams, YG, and Tobey Maguire.
Travis Scott hasn’t exactly been in hiding since ten people were killed at Astroworld, but he was dropped from several shows. The rapper is also facing several lawsuits from the families of victims and those who were injured during the crowd press in Houston. Both Travis Scott and Astroworld promoters are facing a $2 billion lawsuit filed against them.
The rapper also announced a $5 million initiative called Project HEAL that received backlash in the media. The new initiative seeks to address “challenges facing today’s youth, especially those from marginalized and at-risk communities.” Many critics slammed the move, saying the rapper was using a charitable effort to smooth his image as PR stunt in the aftermath of the tragedy.
The family members of Ezra Blount sought a gag order to be put in place on Scott after the announcement. Their lawyers argue that the rapper should be subject to the same legal agreement that keeps them quiet as the case drags on. Scott argues the initiative is his part of bringing about actionable change.
“Over the past few months, I’ve been taking the time and space to grieve, reflect, and do my part to heal my community,” Travis Scott said of Project HEAL. “Most importantly, I want to use my resources and platform moving forward towards actionable change in a lifelong journey for my family and me.”
“Giving back and creating opportunities for the youth is something I’ve always done and will continue to do as long as I have the chance. This program will be a catalyst to real change, and I can’t wait to introduce the rest of the technology and ideas we’ve been working on,” the rapper concludes.
