Yesterday, we lost a true pioneer, visionary and a true musical genius in Prince Rogers Nelson. The news of his death, much like his music, reverberated throughout the world as artists and fans alike took time to express what Prince meant to them; city skylines blazed purple from skyscrapers that were alight with the color we came to associate him by and neighborhoods across the world joined together in unison to grieve by paying him the ultimate tribute—listening to his musical legacy and more importantly—dancing!
Last night DJ Premier celebrated Prince’s life, legacy and especially in Prince’s case, his influence and paid tribute as only Preemo can with an hour-long livestream mix (with some surprises as well–including unreleased beats and DJ only B-Sides) via his Facebook page.
DJ Premier added “I want to salute one of the greatest artists in the world, the artist known as Prince. The guideline that shaped me musically consists of approximately ten people, James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince are all equally my number ones; it’s a three way tie. Because of Prince, I will take any dare and survive the dare! My manager Ian threw the idea (for the tribute mix) at me late last night and I said let’s do it; so we plugged in and did it (real DJ’s do real things)! I should’ve done three hours instead of one. It was unscripted and unrehearsed, but the outcome obviously touched my soul and I hope it does the same for you.  Rest In Purple Prince.â€
