Gyasi Ross drops off the new video for “Marlon Brando”.
“Marlon Brando” is a compelling video from Native American spoken word artist Gyasi Ross. This track appears on the album Isskootsik, which roughly translates to ‘Before Here Was Here’. The project is currently available for pre-order on iTunes via Seattle’s Cabin Gam.
The story behind Marlon Brando is personal for Ross, as the acclaimed actor fought for fishing rights alongside his people in the Pacific Northwest, and even declined to receive his Best Actor Oscar in 1973 to protest the treatment of Native Americans in Hollywood. At the 45th Annual Academy Awards, Brando boycotted and sent Sacheen Littlefoot on stage to decline the award on his behalf. Footage from that meaningful moment is included in this video.
