in 2009, rapper Max B–real name Charly Wingate was sentenced to 75 years in prison for his role in planning the armed robbery and kidnapping that culminated with the murder of David Taylor.
According to authorities, in 2006, Max B sent his ex-girlfriend, exotic dancer Gina Conway, and her stepbrother, Kelvin Leerdam, to a Holiday Inn to rob two men in Fort Lee, New Jersey. One week later, Max B was picked up for the murder and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and murder. He was later found guilty, after a lengthy trial in which Gina Conway testified that he was the brains behind the operation, although he didn’t receive any of the ill-gotten gains.
Max B has continually asserted his innocence–and continued to put out music–since his conviction. A judge denied his appeal on August 30, 2012, leaving the rapper to serve the remainder of his 75 year bid in a New Jersey prison. If made to serve his sentence in its entirety, his earliest release date would be November 9, 2042. Some in Hip Hop assert that they believe Max B is innocent. There is currently a petition to free Max B and on two of those in support are Joe Young and Dame Grease.
