Grammy-winning rapper Lecrae is partnering with Love Beyond Walls, a Georgia-based charity, to make portable hand-washing stations available throughout Atlanta.
In turn, Atlanta’s homeless population, which consists of more than 3,000 individuals, will be better able to quickly and easily wash and sanitize their hands, thereby staying safe and limiting the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).
The charitable effort will initiate on the morning of Thursday, March 19th, at Love Beyond Walls’ College Park facility. There, Lecrae and others will assemble the sinks, fill them with water and equip them with soap, and load them onto trucks. After that, volunteers will strategically install the units around Georgia’s capital city.
Love Beyond Walls’ executive director, Terence Lester, conceived the portable-sink idea. Lester was once homeless, but today, he works with Love Beyond Walls to assist and lift up the less fortunate. The activist, writer, and preacher is currently pursuing a PhD in public policy and social change.
Speaking of Lecrae’s involvement with the portable-sink initiative, Terence Lester said: “Lecrae understands that it takes both faith and action to provide real restoration in our communities and world.â€
Lecrae has long been active in the community and in the social-justice sphere. He’s partnered with real-estate companies to restore and reinvigorate Atlanta’s English Avenue, known colloquially as The Bluff, which suffers from poverty, drug use, and rampant crime. Additionally, the 40-year-old is an active member of Peace Preparatory School’s Board of Advisory. Peace Prep is the first English Avenue school to open in more than 20 years.
Other music-industry organizations, companies, and artists are also working to combat the coronavirus. The Recording Academy pledged $2 million to COVID-19 relief earlier this week, and a portion of the earnings from the chart-topping remix of Cardi B saying “coronavirus†will aid those who’ve been affected financially by the crisis.
Lecrae’s next studio album is scheduled to drop sometime this month, though the release window could be delayed in response to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. His second book, I Am Restored: How I Lost My Religion but Found My Faith, will hit store shelves on October 13th.
