T. Eric Monroe is preparing for new exhibition.

Photographer and author of Rare & Unseen Moments of 90’s Hip-Hop T. Eric Monroe will display his rare photo of Tupac & Biggie (together) and three other photos from his archives at Fotografiska’s new exhibition ‘Hip-Hop: Conscious, Unconscious.’ The photography exhibition documents the 50-year evolution of hip-hop from a nascent cultural movement to a global phenomenon.

In 2021, T. Eric Monroe went viral after Hip-Hop DX published a story about the rare Tupac & Biggie photo that sat undiscovered in his archives for 20 years. The article introduced Monroe’s photography to old and new hip-hop fans unfamiliar with his legacy. “It was a cool moment,” he says. “The story led to some exciting opportunities and connected me with so many fans of hip-hop’s golden age.”

Since beginning his career as a freelance writer and photographer at Thrasher Magazine in 1992, the New Jersey native has photographed fellow hip-hop icons Wu-Tang Clan, Nas, Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest, Gang Starr, Ice-T, Lil Kim, Black Star, Digable Planets, The Pharcyde, Cypress Hill, De La Soul, The Roots, Big Pun, Run-DMC, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, and many more.

“I always aspired to capture everyone just being themselves,” he adds. Monroe will showcase three additional photos at the ‘Hip-Hop: Conscious, Unconscious’ exhibition. One photo that embodies his philosophy is Tupac hugging his friends during a visit to New York City in the early 1990s. “That was such a joyful day and experience for me. I titled the photo “Brotherly Love.” Hip-Hop enthusiasts can view that photo and others from T. Eric Monroe’s archives this week through May 21 at Fotografiska New York. Keep up with T.
